What is the real purpose of the programming assignments? Do they serve a mere purpose?

Image
I found it! The code written in February 2010 for the company called kaChing , later - WealthFront . So-called kaChing hired a recruiter -  Dane Santos , who contacted me through linkedin on Saturday morning, and insisted I cancelled my plans for the weekend. Instead, he said, I should not miss this great opportunity and waste spend a weekend prototyping a Widget for kaChing . I agreed. And I wrote the code. And I spent a beautiful weekend day not on the beach playing with children, but in front of the computer. And I sent my code back to Dane Santos. And this is a feedback I have received "from kaChing" through Dave: Regretfully, kaChing will not be moving forward with you.   Here are a few technical comments they shared with me on your code exercise: - update is triggered by button click instead of form submit, so Enter doesn't work - document.forms isn't as robust or as simple as using an id on the text input - arrow uses an img element instead of backgrou...

StumbleUpon frontpage prototype assignment

It's time to update this blog again. It's been a while. I completed a range of small assignments, which don't worth to be even mentioned. A lot of HTML, CSS, ExtJS, Prototyping and Photoshoping. But here is the one interesting, which proved to me the importance of HTM5, and showed how much development can rely on frontend, how much processor work now is performed on client's browser, and which direction UI technologies are moving. StumbleUpon contacted me for frontend position, and gave me an assignment. I did not express too much enthusiasm professionalism motivation aptitude to work in this cool fast paced San Francisco shop, I guess. I completed the assignment, and never heard from them again. Here is the result of the assignment: http://portfolio.kardash.net/StumbleUpon/ . Demo prototype of StumbleUpon frontpage. HTML is very simple. Utilizing semantics of HTML5, tags such as <header>, <nav>, <aside>, <section>, <footer>. All the...

Different kinds of organizational structures

An organizational structure is the characteristics of the enterprise which consists relationships, coordination, task allocations and control mechanisms between processes, workforce and management, and designs how assets and resources are distributed, assigned and used in the alignment with organization’s strategy and goals. There are three major types of organizational structure: functional, matrix (strong, balanced, or weak) and projectized. In functional organization an employee reports to only one direct manager. This organization has a fairly strict hierarchy of responsibility. Individual jobs are the focal point. Each employee is placed to a particular department, based on skill and qualification matching. This leads to good operational efficiency within the department. Chain of command is stable and linear. However communication among departments can be slow and cumbersome. Project manager is a part-time or seasonal (i.e. very little) role, and does have little or no auth...

In the search of joy of work (4 minutes oral presentation)

More I was thinking of the topic of the presentation more Iwas becoming puzzled what topic to choose. Among number of things which veryimportant for me are happiness, family, friends, god, health, luck, joy oflife, and work, work which I would really like to perform. And today I willtalk about work, since most of us spendmost of our conscious time working, and YOU AGREE that job takes huge amount ofour lives, right ? I am working in software engineering field for a long time.I liked to explore the internet in its late 90s, when it was very young, Iloved to transform new interesting designs and projects into reality, loved tobe involved into mass media projects, when thousands of people started torecognize my work and sometimes my name. However, after a while I started to get bored. Life ofprogramming became not pleasant any more, and going to the office every daybecame a torture. I asked question to myself: what do I do ? Coding andprogramming. How do I feel ? I feel like I am stuck wi...

Two-way Data Binding in Flex 3 and 4

Two-way data binding, aka bidirectional data binding, refers to two components acting as the source object for the destination properties of each other. I.e. if you have a variable defined, and a, let say, input field with this variable bound to text property of the field, when you change the field's text the variable is changed, and when you change the variable, the field's text property is changed. In Flex 3 this is possible using a combination of curly braces and <mx:binding/> statement.Below is the simple example illustrating this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="absolute" minWidth="1024" minHeight="768"> <mx:String id="myName"/> <mx:Binding source="nameInput.text" destination="myName" /> <mx:TextInput id="nameInput" x="30" y="28"/> <mx:L...

Building Adobe Flex project with ANT on Windows

Have you ever? Steps are easy. You download Apache Ant from the official web site. Unzip it, then set up system variables. On Windows they will be (and make sure you have Java JDK, not just JRE installed): 1. ANT_HOME=C:\Ant 2. JAVA_HOME=C:\JDK 3. Edit your PATH system variable and add the following separated by semi-colons: C:\JDK\bin;C:\Ant\bin; Note that you may install JDK and And in any other locations on your workstation. Copy, or have Flex SDK you compile your Flex app with in accessible place. Then write build.properties.override file in the root of your project. File will be similar to: # Use this file to set the path to your Flex SDKs # # flex.sdk.release = the normal Flex SDK # flex.sdk.release is required # flex.sdk.release=/Flex-SDKs/3.4.0 Then you have to create build.xml file at the same location. This is the file, which will be launched by Ant. Actual compiler package, mxmlc.jar, is the part of Flex SDK. Making long story short, below is the example of build xml file....
